SPD Mentorship programme is a supportive developmental relationship established between the mentor and the mentee where expertise, knowledge and skills are shared to develop a positive relationship that has a direct and lasting impact on the lives of the mentees.
Becoming a Mentor
SPD Peer Mentoring Program
This is a volunteer support mechanism of peer education that exists in learning environments such as schools, training programs e.t.c usually between an older more experienced student and less experienced student(s). This relationship identifies a similarity in interests and background between mentor and mentees. This relationship is a good way of building and practicing socio-developmental skills for the mentor and support in learning from experience and adapting to a new environment for the mentee. Peer mentors are picked for their responsibility, confidence, social skills and reliability.
SPD Experienced Mentor Program
Experienced mentoring helps mentees learn and develop the needed skills to be successful in their chosen career or profession, they learn first hand from mentors with the experience and willingness to share their knowledge.
This is a program that will help young reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youths and their self development.
How would I benefit from becoming a Mentor/Mentee?
Being a mentor will give you the opportunity to support needing young people and help give them a positive and constructive outlook to life as well as help them make easier transition to new and upcoming occurrences. This relationship will in turn help the mentor’s fulfilment of their quota to their community as well as personal development. For Peer mentors, it also provides evidence of the skills you have built up, like time management, organisational and communication skills.
Specifically you will:
- Receive a free half day training session to prepare you for your new role
- Receive a certificate of attendance at the training session and for Mentoring in practice.
- Get the opportunity to ‘give something back’ and contribute to the developmental experience of young people.
